 Welcome to Des Moines Neighbors! Minimize

 Welcome to the New Staff at the

Neighborborhood Resource Office

Neighborhood Resource Office- Program Coordinator

My name is Shallee Keenan and I am the new Program Coordinator at the Neighborhood Resource Office. I am 2007 graduate and very dedicated fan of Iowa State University with majors in both Sociology and Criminal Justice. My background includes a multitude of non-profit and community development experience, both employment and on a volunteer basis. This includes time with Habitat for Humanity on various levels, and working with Section 42 Low Income Housing Tax Credits here in Iowa.
I am home grown and educated right here in Des Moines. Within the past year I am very excited to say, that I have purchased my first piece of property. My two year old beagle puppy and I now call Beaverdale home. (We can frequently be found getting “pup cones” at Snookies)
I am very excited about the future of Des Moines Neighbors and the Neighborhood Resource Office. I look forward to getting to know and work with all of you. Stop in and say hello sometime.

  Thrivent Builds Neighborhoods - Project Coordinator

My name is Robin Hamel and I am the new Thrivent Builds Neighborhoods Project Manager. I started here at the Neighborhood Resource Office on September 2nd. I am from the south side of Des Moines originally but I have been away from home for a while and I am so happy to be back. I have had a wide variety of experiences in the non profit world working in education, public health, and community organizing. My husband Ben and I somewhat recently returned from serving in the Peace Corps in Micronesia for 27 months. It was a wonderful experience for both of us and confirmed my desire to serve my community. I am so excited about the TBN project in the King Irving and Mondamin neighborhoods. I am really enjoying learning about all the neighborhood associations in Des Moines and I am looking forward to meeting all of you.

Website: rebuildingtogetherdesmoines.org

Rebuilding Together is a non-profit organization supported entirely by contributions of time, labor, material and money.  We are dedicated to repairing homes of those who, due to financial hardship, age, and/or disability, cannot do the work themselves.  Skilled and unskilled volunteers along with able-bodied members of the recipient’s family and friends complete the repairs at no cost to the homeowner.  All able-bodied family members and friends are expected to work along with our volunteers at your home as a condition of acceptance into our program.

To be eligible for consideration in the program:

1.        Applicants must own and live in their own home and have neither the resources nor the ability to do the work themselves (Our program is unable to consider mobile homes);

2.        Home must be insured under a homeowner’s policy;

3.        Applicants must meet income eligibility guidelines and provide documentation of total household income (all persons living in the home);

4.        Assessed value of the property cannot exceed $130,000.

Home safety is the first priority of Rebuilding Together.  Volunteers provide improvements that enhance the safety and comfort of your home.  Because it is primarily a short-term project (one day), major structural repairs are not possible.  Also, we need you to understand that time may prevent the volunteers from accomplishing everything that you would like to have done in your home.

If you’d like your house to be considered for our next Rebuilding Day (our traditional Rebuilding Day is the first Saturday in May), please complete the enclosed application and return it to Rebuilding Together Greater Des Moines. Call (515) 284-7403.

All homeowners who apply will be contacted to arrange for a visit by a team of Rebuilding Together volunteers.  The information they gather will be used in determining sites to be repaired during our next Rebuilding Day.  Once final site selections are completed, all applicants will be notified in writing as to whether or not their home has been selected for this year’s rebuilding events.

Applications continue to be accepted.
